J. Whit Sumner

John Whitmire Sumner joined the firm in May 2014 and is currently a shareholder in the firm. A fourth generation Midlander, Whit attended Midland High School, graduated from Duke University in 1994, and received his law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law. Upon graduation from law school in 1997, Whit spent a year in Andrews, Texas, as corporate counsel for an oil and gas service company before moving to Austin to work for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (now Texas Commission on Environmental Quality). Whit moved back to Midland in his job with the TCEQ. Since 2004, Whit has been practicing in the private sector where prior to joining the firm he was a partner with Canon & Sumner, P.C., and has worked in the areas of Oil and Gas Law, Real Estate, Contracts, and Banking, primarily with a focus in Oil and Gas Title Examination.
